Macbeth Quotes Explained

Macbeth, William Shakespeares bloodiest play, is one of the most quoted dramatic works in the English language. Memorable lines from the tragedy explore themes like reality and illusion, ambition and power, and guilt and remorse. Famous quotations from Macbeth are still recited (and sometimes spoofed) today in movies, TV shows, commercials, and even the daily news. Quotes About Reality and Illusion Fair is foul, and foul is fair:Hover through the fog and filthy air.(Act I, Scene 1) The Tragedy of Macbeth opens with an eerie, supernatural scene. Amidst thunder and lightening, three witches moan into the wind. They tell us that nothing is as it seems. Whats good (fair) is evil (foul). Whats evil is good. Everything is strangely reversed. The witches—also called weird sisters—are odd and unnatural. They speak in sing-song rhymes, but describe filth and evil. Theres an unexpected rhythm to their words. Most of  Shakespeares characters speak in iambs, with the emphasis falling on the second syllable: da-dum, da-dum. Shakespeares witches, however, chant in  trochees. The emphasis falls on the first syllable: Fair is foul, and foul is fair. This particular quote is also a paradox. By pairing opposites, the witches disrupt the natural order. Macbeth aligns himself with their twisted thinking when he echoes their words in Act I, Scene 3: So foul and fair a day I have not seen[.] Shakespeares witches are fascinating because they force us to question the natural order of things, as well as our notions about fate and free will. Appearing at key moments in Macbeth, they chant prophesies, spark Macbeths lust for the throne, and manipulate his thinking. Is this a dagger which I see before me,The handle toward my hand? Come, let me clutch thee.I have thee not, and yet I see thee still.Art thou not, fatal vision, sensibleTo feeling as to sight? Or art thou butA dagger of the mind, a false creation,Proceeding from the heat-oppressed brain?(Act II, Scene 1) The witches also set the tone for moral confusion and hallucinatory scenes like Macbeths encounter with a floating dagger. Here, Macbeth is preparing to murder the king when delivers this haunting soliloquy. His tortured imagination (heat-oppressed brain) conjures the illusion of the murder weapon. His soliloquy becomes a chilling apostrophe in which he speaks directly to the dagger: Come, let me clutch thee. The dagger, of course, cannot respond. Like many things in Macbeths distorted vision, its not even real. Quotes About Ambition and Power Stars, hide your fires;Let not light see my black and deep desires.(Act I, Scene 4) Macbeth is a complex and conflicted character. His comrades call him brave and worthy, but the witches prophecy has awakened a secret longing for power. These lines, spoken by Macbeth as an aside, reveal the  black and deep desires he struggles to hide. Lusting for the crown, Macbeth plots to kill the king. But, on reflection, he questions the practicality of such an action. I have no spurTo prick the sides of my intent, but onlyVaulting ambition, which oerleaps itselfAnd falls on the other.(Act I, Scene 7) Here, Macbeth acknowledges that ambition is his only motivation (spur) to commit murder. Like a horse spurred to leap too high, this much ambition can only result in downfall. Ambition is Macbeths tragic flaw, and its possible that nothing could have saved him from his fate. However, much of the blame can be placed on his wife. Power-hungry and manipulative, Lady Macbeth vows to do whatever it takes to advance her husbands murderous plan. †¦Come, you spiritsThat tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here,And fill me from the crown to the toe top-fullOf direst cruelty! make thick my blood;Stop up the access and passage to remorse,That no compunctious visitings of natureShake my fell purpose, nor keep peace betweenThe effect and it! Come to my womans breasts,And take my milk for gall, you murdering ministers,Wherever in your sightless substancesYou wait on natures mischief!(Act I, Scene 5) In this soliloquy, Lady Macbeth braces herself for murder. She rejects Elizabethan notions of womanhood (unsex me), and begs to be rid of soft emotions and female visitings of nature (menstruation). She asks the spirits to fill her breasts with poison (gall). Womens milk is a recurring motif in Shakespeares play, representing the soft, nurturing qualities Lady Macbeth renounces. She believes that her husband is too full o the milk of human kindness (Act I, Scene 5) to kill the king. When he waffles, she tells him that she would rather murder her own infant than abandon their murderous plan. †¦I have given suck, and knowHow tender tis to love the babe that milks me:I would, while it was smiling in my face,Have pluckd my nipple from his boneless gums,And dashd the brains out, had I so sworn as youHave done to this.(Act I, Scene 7) In this shocking rebuke, Lady Macbeth attacks her husbands manhood. She implies that he must be weak—weaker than his wife, weaker than a nursing mother—if he cannot keep his vow to take the throne. Elizabethan audiences would have been repulsed by Lady Macbeths raw ambition and reversal of traditional sex roles. Just as her husband crossed moral boundaries, Lady Macbeth defied her place in society. In the 1600s, she may have appeared as weird and unnatural as the witches with their eerie incantations. Todays attitudes are very different, yet ambitious and powerful women still arouse suspicion. Critics and conspiracy theorists have used the name Lady Macbeth to deride public figures like Hillary Clinton and Julia Gillard. Quotes About  Guilt and Remorse Methought I heard a voice cry Sleep no more!Macbeth does murder sleep.†¦What hands are here? ha! they pluck out mine eyes. Will all great Neptunes ocean wash this bloodClean from my hand? No, this my hand will ratherThe multitudinous seas in incarnadine,Making the green one red.(Act II, Scene 2) Macbeth speaks these lines immediately after murdering the king. To murder sleep has a double meaning. Macbeth has killed a sleeping man, and hes also killed his own serenity. Macbeth knows that because of this action, he will never be able to rest peacefully.   The guilt Macbeth feels stirs hallucinations and gruesome visions of blood. Hes shocked by the sight of his murderous hands. (They pluck out mine eyes.) In his tormented mind, his hands are soaked with so much blood, they would turn the ocean red.   Lady Macbeth shares Macbeths crime, but does not immediately show guilt.  She coldly returns the daggers to the crime scene and smears blood on the kings sleeping grooms so that they will be blamed. Seemly unruffled, she tells her husband, A little water clears us of this deed (Act II, Scene 2). Out, damned spot! out, I say! — One: two: why, then, tis time to dot. — Hell is murky! — Fie, mylord, fie! a soldier, and afeard? What need wefear who knows it, when none can call our power toaccount? — Yet who would have thought the old manto have had so much blood in him.†¦.The thane of Fife had a wife: where is she now? —What, will these hands neer be clean? — No more othat, my lord, no more o that: you mar all withthis starting.†¦Heres the smell of the blood still: all theperfumes of Arabia will not sweeten this littlehand. Oh, oh, oh!†¦Wash your hands, put on your nightgown; look not sopale. — I tell you yet again, Banquos buried; hecannot come out ons grave.†¦To bed, to bed! theres knocking at the gate:come, come, come, come, give me your hand. Whatsdone cannot be undone. — To bed, to bed, to bed! (Act V, Scene 1) The king is only one of many killings during Macbeths bloody reign. To hold onto his ill-gotten crown, he orders the slaughter of his friend Banquo and the entire household of Lord Macduff, the Thane of Fife. Macbeth suffers fits of hysteria and hallucinates Banquos ghost with blood-clotted hair. But its the hard-hearted Lady Macbeth who eventually collapses under the weight of guilt, and she is the one who gives this monologue. Sleepwalking, she wrings her hands and babbles about the stain of so much spilled blood.   The phrase Out, damned spot! can seem comical to modern readers. Lady Macbeths distraught words have been used in advertisements for products ranging from household cleaners to acne medicines. But this is the raving of a woman who teeters on the brink of madness.   Parts of Lady Macbeths monologue, like the incantation of the witches, depart from the traditional iambic pentameter. In a metrical pattern called a spondee, she strings together syllables that have equal weight: Out-damned-spot-out. Since each one-syllable word is equally stressed, the emotional tension is heightened. Readers (or listeners) are more likely to feel the impact of each word. The words themselves seem nonsensical. They are non sequiturs, jumping from thought to thought. Lady Macbeth is reliving all the crimes, remembering sounds, smells, and images. One after the other, she names murder victims: the king (the old man), Macduffs wife, and Banquo. To-morrow, and to-morrow, and to-morrow,Creeps in this petty pace from day to dayTo the last syllable of recorded time,And all our yesterdays have lighted foolsThe way to dusty death. Out, out, brief candle!Lifes but a walking shadow, a poor playerThat struts and frets his hour upon the stageAnd then is heard no more: it is a taleTold by an idiot, full of sound and fury,Signifying nothing.(Act V, Scene 5) Unable to recover from her guilt, Lady Macbeth kills herself. When this news reaches Macbeth, hes already in deep despair. Abandoned by his noblemen and knowing his own days are numbered, he delivers one of the most desolate soliloquies in the English language. In this extended metaphor, Macbeth compares life to a theatrical performance. Days on earth are as short-lived as the candles that illuminate the Elizabethan stage. Each person is nothing more than a shadow cast by that flickering light, a silly actor who struts about and then vanishes when the candle is snuffed. In this metaphor, nothing is real and nothing matters. Life is a tale told by an idiot†¦ signifying nothing. American author William Faulkner titled his novel The Sound and the Fury  after a line from Macbeths soliloquy. Poet Robert Frost borrowed a phrase for his poem, Out, Out —. Even the cartoon Simpson family embraced the metaphor with a melodramatic rendition by Homer Simpson. Ironically, Shakespeares tragedy ends soon after this somber speech. Its easy to imagine audiences blinking from the theater, wondering, Whats real? Whats illusion? Are we part of the play? Moral Responsibility and Harry Frankfurt - 1286 Words

The incompatibilists argue that one is morally responsible for what she has done given that she could have done otherwise. Further, they think that if determinism is true then one could not have done otherwise, so if determinism is true, one is not morally responsible for things she has done. In debates surrounding the issue of free will, philosophers have focused on discussing whether determinism is true or false. Harry Frankfurt thinks even though the requirement of alternative possibilities in order to be held morally responsible for our actions seems intuitively plausible, it is a questionable premise in the argument provided by incompatibilists. Frankfurt calls the premise that â€Å"a person is morally responsible for what he has done only if he could have done otherwise† the principle of alternative possibilities or PAP (Frankfurt, 829). He argues that PAP is false and a person can be held morally responsible even if she could not have done otherwise. Frankfurt presents counterexamples to PAP to prove its falsity. He tells us to assume that there is a universal controller that wants to ensure certain outcomes. The controller makes it impossible for an agent to act otherwise, which causes her to act exactly as the controller wishes. Frankfurt argues that in such a case it is true that agent is not responsible for her action and that she could not have done otherwise, but he thinks that the agent’s lack of responsibility does not follow from her inability to do otherwise.Show MoreRelatedThe Principle Of Alternate Possibilities1210 Words   |  5 Pagesalternate possibility, to do so. But, is this really the case? Is it truly the case that you need to be making a choice between two genuine alternatives in order to be responsible for your actions? Harry Frankfurt famously argued that alternate possibilities are not necessary for moral responsibility, and therefore that PAP is false. Frankfurt concludes in his essay â€Å"Alternate Possibilities and Moral Responsibility† that the two major concepts are compatible. These two authors are among the most famous of Compatibilists (hence the fact that they believe free will and determinism are compatible ideas) in philosophical history. The question that then arises in the realm of compatibilism particularly, is one dealing with moral responsibility: If our paths in life are not totally pre-determinedRead MoreThe Metaphysical Issue Of Free Will1368 Words   |  6 PagesIf we are not free to choose these actions, then are we responsible for them? The importance of free will then is made more salient when the concept of moral responsibility is introduced. These moral obligations can reflect on how we blame, praise or judge certain courses of action. Harry Frankfurt debates the issue concerning moral responsibility without the presence of free will. However, his hypothetical demonstration cannot exist, therefore his account does not adequately address the problem withRead MoreHarry Frankfurt s Arguments For The Compatibilism Of Determinism And Freedom Of Will1578 Words   |  7 PagesIn this paper, I will consider Harry Frankfurt s arguments for the compatibilism of determinism and freedom of will, as presented in Freedom of Will and the Concept of Person and some problems that arise with his reasoning. I will claim that those problems do not come from any propositions central to Frankfurt s argument, but rather from his neglect of the issue of the relationship between freedom of will and moral responsibility. I will argue, that Frankfurt makes an invalid implicit assumptionRead MoreThe Case Of The Unwilling Addict1479 Words   |  6 PagesDesires and Moral Responsibility We have certain notions of what free-will is. But before we can discuss the notion of free-will, we need to establish the meaning of this term. Having free-will refers to one’s choices or desires (O’Connor, â€Å"Free Will†). A person who is able to act according to the determinations of their will (i.e., choices or desires) is free (Russell, â€Å"Hume on Free Will†). I will explore the criticisms of this from Frankfurt, with the suggestion that Frankfurt cases are not as damaging as they seem. After the massive success of The Weeknd in Beauty Behind the Madness, which reached 1 in billboard 200. The album had viral hits like â€Å"The hills†, â€Å"In the night†, and â€Å"I can’t feel my face†, with all of them having millions of views on YouTube. The album still has an advantageous position in the list to this day being 90 in all the other albums, after 115 weeks of its release. Many were very skeptical about his next album, â€Å"what is he going to make next, does he still have it†? When The Weeknd released â€Å"Starboy† the internet was waiting for new releases of more music, The Weeknd teased about his new album but first released several songs like â€Å"I feel it coming† and â€Å"False Alarm†. After some time, The Weeknd finally released the album called â€Å"Starboy† on November 25, 2016. The album was an instant success with songs that became platinum like â€Å"Starboy†, â€Å"I feel it co ming†, â€Å"Party Monster†, â€Å"Reminder†, â€Å"Rockin†, and â€Å"Die for You†, and the album was certified double platinum. â€Å"Always tryin’ to send me off to rehab, all these drugs started feeling like it’s decaf,† he sings on â€Å"The Hills.† But on â€Å"Starboy,† Tesfaye embraces his troubled past to sing around a complex character, a la Melanie Martinez on her debut, â€Å"Crybaby.† The album is so much more than just catchy pop music (which, of course, it is). It’s also a melodic mind-trip into a drug-fueled fantasy land, helmed by Lana Del Rey, Kendrick Lamar, and Daft Punk collaborations sprinkled in as stimulants. The lead singles, â€Å"I Feel It Coming,† â€Å"Starboy† and â€Å"Party Monster,† are all wildly different examples of The Weeknd’s understanding of mood and melody. â€Å"I Feel It Coming† has Tesfaye at his most tender, crooning to his girl about taking their relationship step by step. It may be as edgy as ever, but this side of The Weeknd is rare, and seeing this sort of sensitivity is an absol ute treat. Then there’s the titular track, â€Å"Starboy,† a boastful vocal treat in which cars, women, and, of course, drugs are centerpieces. â€Å"Look what you’ve done,† he wails over a cascading fall of drums, asking the listener to recognize that they helped create his grandiose persona through fame. Tesfaye sings of having â€Å"Hundred on the dash† and â€Å"Being close to God† in the icy way he has mastered and cements the weight of the song with the very last line before the refrain of the hook: â€Å"We don’t pray for love. We just pray for cars.† Finally, there’s â€Å"Party Monster,† a dark party anthem about paranoia, addiction, and women. â€Å"And I seen her, get richer in the pole† he sings about the stripper he meets, who steals his heart with her â€Å"lips like Serena.† Filled with punchlines and wit, alongside reflections on the party monster lifestyle, this single may be the str ongest of the bunch. If â€Å"Beauty Behind the Madness† was the first step in cementing Abel Tesfaye’s impressive range, â€Å"Starboy† is the perfect next chapter in an exciting legacy, proving to us that The Weeknd has evolved into a force to be reckoned with in modern music. Pop Music Essay Example For Students

Pop Music Essay America listen to popular music, which is also known as pop music (Murray). There are so many different music genres in the world and its amazing how pop music can capture 73 percent of the tens attention. Pop music offers an endless variety of styles and meanings to the listening audience. Although I listen to many other music genres, I listen to pop music a lot more often. And there are reasons why 73 percent of other teens do too. Pop music is such a diverse genre that you will rarely ever hear the same message sung in different ways. Other genres like IP-hop will focus on the topics of money, sex, and starting from the bottom. Music genres like that is all the same Just put into different words every time. I find that pop music has to offer more variety than any other genre of music. Regardless of the negative feedback pop music gets; I have chosen 5 songs in which shows the diversity I am referring too. Each song is different than the others. This music offers different meanings, messages, ways and opportunities for the audience to connect too in the way that will make them feel like their not alone. All five pop songs I will e presenting each reflect a different message. But who says music needs to have meaningful messages? People like myself also look for music we can dance too, music that is Just fun to listen to. In one of the songs I will be presenting will show that the audience also wants something they can Jam too, regardless of its pointless lyrics. The audience of these songs is listeners from radio stations, tunes and the web. The pop artists that I am about to present to you offer good quality and represent this genre very well. All the songs I have chosen were all released within the year of 2013. Which have also been on the top 100 on tunes and top tracks on Youth. The songs I picked are all part of the pop culture because it is significant in a way that everyone is able to connect too. Most people go through or will go through the situations in each of the five songs. We like to know we are not alone. Currently number 7 on top tracks on tunes is Wake Me Up by Vicki. This song has a very strong message, and the video to this song Just adds more power to it. The video shows two young girls who are seen as outcasts by their town. The girls then get tired f being Judged constantly so they decide to move somewhere where they are accepted for who they are. This song is mostly targeted to young teens who are confused about who they are. Many people are pressured to fit in and be like everyone else. So Vicki is sending a message through the song that it is k to be different. Anything that anyone does for the pleasure of someone other than himself or herself is the start of unhappiness. Deem Lavabo directs her songs towards younger teens as well. One example is the song Warrior, which was released early May of 2013. It is about a girl going through heartbreak and instead of getting weak, she gets stronger by learning from it. Im stronger than Vive ever been. Those lyrics show that she isnt broken by the heartbreak but made into a warrior. The cultural message I think she is trying to convey is that when you go through struggles you shouldnt let it bring you down but bring you to be a stronger person. After all, By gasser anything out of ones comfort zone and not stepping out of ones own shadow. .ucb049430b536339397bb8bb64f805bda , .ucb049430b536339397bb8bb64f805bda .postImageUrl , .ucb049430b536339397bb8bb64f805bda .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ucb049430b536339397bb8bb64f805bda , .ucb049430b536339397bb8bb64f805bda:hover , .ucb049430b536339397bb8bb64f805bda:visited , .ucb049430b536339397bb8bb64f805bda:active { border:0!important; } .ucb049430b536339397bb8bb64f805bda .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ucb049430b536339397bb8bb64f805bda { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ucb049430b536339397bb8bb64f805bda:active , .ucb049430b536339397bb8bb64f805bda:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ucb049430b536339397bb8bb64f805bda .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ucb049430b536339397bb8bb64f805bda .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ucb049430b536339397bb8bb64f805bda .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ucb049430b536339397bb8bb64f805bda .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ucb049430b536339397bb8bb64f805bda:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ucb049430b536339397bb8bb64f805bda .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ucb049430b536339397bb8bb64f805bda .ucb049430b536339397bb8bb64f805bda-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ucb049430b536339397bb8bb64f805bda:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Music College EssayWake me up, and Warrior are both songs that majority of teenagers can relate too. Each usage shows similar situations that an average teenager will experience, which is why the audience of these artists is by young people who are seeking for advice and inspiration by these artists that have already gone through those situations. Yet the songs have very different messages, such as love versus self-confidence. Having inspirational messages to the audience is very important because it stimulates positive influence. On top of the world, by Imagine Dragons is one of my favorites out of all the 5 songs I will have present by the end. This song is about a man w ho as gone through many obstacles throughout his life and always avoiding them in order to not be affected. Then he realizes he needs to take some risks because not everything will fall how you want it to. l always tried to take the easy way out is a part of the song that stood out to me the most. I think everyone is afraid to take some risk because we dont know what can come of it. The message I get from this song is that you dont know until you try. Hes telling the audience to take chances and dont let opportunities pass you by. This song is different than the two previous songs I alike about because this isnt focused towards young teens. The artist wants this message to be heard by everyone. It does not matter how old you are because no matter what something will always come in your way and its up to you to decide whether to take the easy way out or to take chances. Choosing to take the easy way out is usually the most picked choice because its Just easier. Its also less scary than to not know the result of that decision. In the song, Counting Stars, One Republic chose to take the easy way out. The Song is about a man who basically lets big opportunities pass him by. Through he says, Lately Vive been losing sleep, dreaming about the things that we could be. He is referring to a girl who he is in love with but loving her back would cause problems. The girl lives far from him and she wants him to come live with her but he literally cant afford to because hes struggling with money. Hes letting this opportunity pass him by because he is scared and is uncertain of what will become. In the article, Lorded storms the throne of pop music by Haley Blue; young pop artist Lorded says, so much of the music thats on top 40 dado is so dumb. Lorded believes that most of the music on the radio is irrelevant to the audience. Lords new single Royals will tell you all about her beliefs on pop music. But one belief she has is that most pop artists think money is everything. In this case, One Republic does wonder if money is more important than happiness. This song is significant because like the previous songs its something people go through; its reality. Catchy song, Treasure by Bruno Mars is different than the other songs I talked about. The song is from a male point of view and is singing about a male. It is objectifying women with every lyric he sings. One example is, l goat tell you a little something about yourself. In other words, hes saying women need someone to tell them what they are worth and who they are. Some women have actually complained about the song. The message Bruno Mars is trying to convey is obvious with this song. Men are more worthy than women. Regardless, women still listen to the song. Why? Because of the catchy beat, and lyrics. Earlier I explained that not all pop music would offer great meaning but instead offer a good beat to listen to. Ones lyrics isnt all that important. This article is about how pop singers Madonna and Mile Cyrus both are known as being very explicit. Pop music is seen poorly in this article because of the way they flaunt their music. .u454cfbd6f4199fac2597f969cb0ce8fe , .u454cfbd6f4199fac2597f969cb0ce8fe .postImageUrl , .u454cfbd6f4199fac2597f969cb0ce8fe .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u454cfbd6f4199fac2597f969cb0ce8fe , .u454cfbd6f4199fac2597f969cb0ce8fe:hover , .u454cfbd6f4199fac2597f969cb0ce8fe:visited , .u454cfbd6f4199fac2597f969cb0ce8fe:active { border:0!important; } .u454cfbd6f4199fac2597f969cb0ce8fe .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u454cfbd6f4199fac2597f969cb0ce8fe { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u454cfbd6f4199fac2597f969cb0ce8fe:active , .u454cfbd6f4199fac2597f969cb0ce8fe:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u454cfbd6f4199fac2597f969cb0ce8fe .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u454cfbd6f4199fac2597f969cb0ce8fe .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u454cfbd6f4199fac2597f969cb0ce8fe .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u454cfbd6f4199fac2597f969cb0ce8fe .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u454cfbd6f4199fac2597f969cb0ce8fe:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u454cfbd6f4199fac2597f969cb0ce8fe .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u454cfbd6f4199fac2597f969cb0ce8fe .u454cfbd6f4199fac2597f969cb0ce8fe-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u454cfbd6f4199fac2597f969cb0ce8fe:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Film Music EssayRegardless of all the negative comments and views on such artists, they are still seen as pop icons. Pop artists like that get thrown many negative feed back, but in the end they still have their music played everywhere such as the radio, TV, and all over the internet. Popular music is more often times seen as meaningless music, but the songs I presented prove otherwise. All music has messages that the artist intends to convey, but I believe that its up to the audience on how they want to receive it.

The Necessity Of Positive And Normative Economics Essays (1515 words)

The Necessity Of Positive And Normative Economics Keynes once wrote: The object of a positive science is the establishment of uniformities, of a normative science the determination of ideals. (Blaug, 122) This is the dichotomy that economists recognize when approaching their field of study. The social scientist must recognize both positive and normative distinctions, means and ends, as important factors of fruitful research. Secondly, they must clearly express the conditions and assumption which theories holds in order for economics to be useful for society. Positive science is that which is a fact of nature or a fact by definition. In mathematics this is the difference between the knowledge that the angles of a triangle sum to 180 degrees, and the definition of a triangle as a two dimensional polygon with 3 sides. In economics, such facts of knowledge include that money is a store of value, or facts of definition that the UNs Human Development Index ranks Canada above Mexico. These are all positive facts. Whether they rely or are associated with values does not reduce their factualness to a normative realm. One cannot refute positive statements by claiming they are arrived at due to values. It is up to normative science to judge the value of the HDI, a positive fact, and not mistake this action as denying the existence of the HDI. This is probably better stated with a topic from macroeconomics. Suppose that some economists agree that inflation produces the social cost of having to adjust prices to new levels. This is a completely positive statement. As long as every term has been clearly defined, one can understand the relation between inflation (as defined) and cost (as defined). Yes, the definitions have been chosen based on specific values, but this does not disaffirm the statement as a true reflection of reality. Suppose we make a true statement which denies that inflation produces this social cost, by defining inflation or the cost differently. The old positive fact of reality that the first statement asserted has not changed. By changing definitions, we have merely created a new positive statement. A statement is a true positive fact, according to Weston, when it is consistent with definitions and axioms that define the system. We are not necessarily saying anything about what is true outside of that sys tem. (Weston, 4) The values we have based each statement on does not induce them into the sphere of normative science. Neither makes any statement concerning the values of inflation or costs, nor that one statement is preferable over the other. Here lies the duty of the economist: to make a normative decision on which positive statements are most applicable to the needs of society. Do we want to evaluate policy based on inflation definition number one or two? Do we care about social cost one more than social cost two? These are in the scope of normative science. Effectual positive facts are the means in reality to achieve ends. In this manner, economics is not value-free, and for good reason. There must be some utility gained from knowledge for research to be beneficial to mankind. Positive facts are not study for the sake of learning positive facts, but as a possible means to an end. Normative economics are those value statements which guide our use and development of positive science. Positive facts are not limited by our values, but we can use our values to determine which positive statements are of most interest to society. Positive statements are the basis for any science, but do little good for mankind if we do not evaluate and distinguish some statements as more useful than others. Thus positive science is made fruitful through normative values, and reciprocally, normative judgments are based on objective positive science. It is best to demonstrate this with an example from a less controversial science, physics. If a physicist decides that we need to further study thermodynamics in a specific way because of the needs of applications in space, his approach is a normative decision based on the normative desires of some group of people. However, the results which he arrives at will remain true for the conditions and viewpoint specified, despite the value to the space industry, which may
